World Series Game Three; Cardinals knock off the Tigers 5-0 take a 2-1 lead in the series

St. Louis won its first World Series game at home since playing the Minnesota Twins in 1987. The Cardinals were swept by the Boston Red Sox in 2004.

The Cardinals struck for two runs in the fourth with a bases loaded double off the bat of Jim Edmonds and Chris Carpenter pitched eight shutout innings throwing only 82 pitches for the win.

Carpenter allowed three hits on the night and didn’t walk a Tigers batter. Sean Casey picked up two of the Tigers hits while Curtis Granderson, Placido Polanco, and Ivan Rodriguez went hitless for the third time in the series.

In the bottom of the seventh Joel Zumaya walked David Eckstein and Preston Wilson before falling behind 2-0 on Albert Pujols. Pujols then hit a come-backer to Zumaya who threw wide to third resulting in Eckstein and Wilson scoring and pushing the Cardinals lead to 4-0.

The Cardinals added a fifth run in the bottom of the eight on a wild pitch from Zach Miner.

Braden Looper threw the ninth inning to complete the Cardinals shutout.

Game four will be played on Wednesday in St. Louis.
