After more than 15 years of chronic drug and alcohol abuse, he had all but given up on the notion that recovery was possible. “I had made 6 prior attempts to rid myself of drugs and the problems associated with addiction”, Assante stated. “I tried every approach including Therapeutic Communities, AA, NA, Hospitals, psychiatrists, and psychologists. None of these dealt with the underlying cause of why I was using drugs”.
In 2002, Mr. Assante became involved with the Narconon program. When asked what fundamental change was brought about, he answered, “This was a totally new approach to handling not just my addiction, but every aspect of my life”.
Untreated substance abuse and addiction add significant costs to families and communities, including those related to violence and property crimes, prison expenses, court and criminal costs, emergency room visits, healthcare utilization, child abuse and neglect, lost child support, foster care and welfare costs, reduced productivity, and unemployment.
The cost to society of illicit drug abuse alone is $181 billion annually. When combined with alcohol and tobacco costs, they exceed $500 billion including healthcare, criminal justice, and lost productivity. Successful drug abuse treatment can help reduce these costs in addition to crime, and the spread of HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, and other infectious diseases. It is estimated that for every dollar spent on addiction treatment programs, there is a $4 to $7 reduction in the cost of drug-related crimes.
Since 2003, Mr. Assante has worked tirelessly in the helping industry, saving thousands of lives. He serves as Deputy Executive Director to Narconon Freedom Center. Happily married with two children, Assante feels his success would not have been possible without the Narconon program.
Another strong evidence based strength is the length of a Narconon program. Research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse has shown unequivocally that good outcomes are contingent on adequate treatment length. Generally, for residential or outpatient treatment, participation for less than 90 days is of limited effectiveness, and treatment lasting significantly longer is recommended for maintaining positive outcomes.
