In Dec. 2011, the FDA released an announcement that it would be evaluating post-marketing reports of serious bleeding episodes in patients taking Pradaxa. While severe and even fatal bleeding events are a well-recognized complication of anticoagulants, the agency said it is looking to determine whether the reports of
Pradaxa bleeding in users are occurring more commonly than expected. According to the FDA, Pradaxa users should seek immediate medical care if they notice any signs which may indicate bleeding such as red or black tarry stools; vomiting or coughing up blood; frequent nose bleeds; abnormal bleeding from the gums; heavier than normal menstrual bleeding; and pink or brown-colored urine.
Pradaxa was approved in Oct. 2010 to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. Unlike older blood thinners, such as Coumadin (warfarin), Pradaxa has no antidote. While the anticlotting effects of Coumadin can be reversed with Vitamin K, no such reversal agent exists for Pradaxa users. Therefore, if a patient starts bleeding uncontrollably on Pradaxa, their only option is to undergo dialysis, according to reports.
