Downfall of KONY: The Social Media Effect

In what has become a rather humorous and ironic turn of events, KONY 2012s legitimacy as a campaign went up as rapidly as it plummeted back down. KONY 2012 has been one of the largest awareness campaigns known to date, as we all know. Not only did it go viral at a rate faster than almost any prior campaign video, topping 100 million hits within 2 weeks, but it has also unprecedented awareness of a cause to millions of people, encouraging the public to fight for a cause they knew very little about. The unimaginable success of the campaign showed how social media is beginning to affect politics and public opinion on the happenings of the modern world.
