Indonesian authorities shot and killed five suspected terrorists, including a suspect on a most-wanted list, Sunday in Bali. National Police spokesman Saud Usman Nasution said it appears the suspects were planning to raise money for terror plots by executing several robberies on the resort island.
According to National Police Senoir Commander Boy Rafli Amar, the suspects had been tracked by a counter-terrorism unit for four weeks before Sunday’s raids. Authorities trapped the men in two different houses and a shootout ensued. It is unclear if any police officers were injured or killed in the gunfight. Guns, ammunition and masks were recovered from both houses.
The men were believed to be members of militant group that was linked to an armed bank robbery in Medan two years ago. The same group ran a jihadi training camp in Aceh province. The camp was discovered in February 2010.
