Two days of talks in Costa Rica have produced little resolution to the political crisis in Honduras as delegates representing ousted President Manuel Zelaya and interim president Roberto Micheletti failed to reach an agreement.
Costa Rican President Oscar Arias is leading mediations between the two sides but he has confirmed that an agreement between the two sides has been difficult to manufacture. According to Arias a seven-point proposal he crafted had been accepted by the Zelaya delegation but quickly rejected by the Micheletti delegation.
The interim government in Honduras has refused to accept any agreement that would put Zelaya back in the leadership position and have said any future talks would fail if they centered on Zelaya returning.
Zelaya was overthrown on June 28 when army troops kidnapped him and flew him out of the country. The coup has been heavily criticized by a number of international leaders and organizations but the interim government has defended the coup, accusing Zelaya of attempting to change the country’s constitution in an effort to extend his presidential term.
