Author frank McCourt, best known for his 1996 memoir
Angela’s Ashes, has died. McCourt lost his battle with cancer Sunday. He was
78.
McCourt was recently treated for melanoma, the deadliest
form of skin cancer. He contracted meningitis two weeks ago. Last Thursday,
McCourt’s brother Malachy McCourt announced that Frank was gravely ill and “is
not expected to live.”
McCourt shot to fame in 1996 following the publication of
Angela’s Ashes, an account of growing up in poverty in Ireland. The book won
the Pulitzer Prize.
Funeral plans are pending.
