U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates Announces Temporary Troop Increase

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has announced the Army will be temporarily increasing its troop level by 22,000 over the next three years as a means of easing the current strain on deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The increase would be paid for out of the defense budget created by Gates, a budget that set aside $11 billion for increases to military personnel.

There are currently 547,000 active U.S. soldiers.
