New York, NY – The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) released findings from their annual multi-procedural statics today. And according to the survey liposuction was the number one cosmetic surgery performed in 2011.
The ASAPS, which has been compiling statistics since 1997, found that the overall number of cosmetic procedures performed increased by 197 percent over the past 15 years. In total, 9.2 million surgical and non-surgical plastic surgeries were performed in the U.S. last year.
Liposuction took the number one spot of the most popular cosmetic surgeries with breast augmentations coming in at number two.
Women accounted for 91 percent of the patients seeking cosmetic surgeries with close to 8.4 million procedures performed. The top five procedures for women were breast augmentation, liposuction, tummy tuck, eyelid lift and breast lift.
While men comprised only 9 percent of the total number of procedures, they represent a 181 percent increase over the past 15 years. For men, liposuction was the most sought out procedure with rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery and breast reduction and facelift ranking in the top five.
The ASAPS, who published the results on their website, also found that invasive surgeries are more requested than non-invasive procedures such as injectable fillers and skin-rejuvenating procedures.
This study demonstrates how the plastic surgery industry has grown and the industry has been able to shed the negative associations people have had about plastic surgeries. More and more people realize that a procedure can have a significant boost to their self-esteem.
