Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori Sentenced to 7 ½ Years for Corruption

Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori has been handed a seven-and-a-half year jail sentence after the country’s Supreme Court found the leader guilty of corruption.

Fujimori admitted he used $15 million in state fund to pay his spy chief Vladimiro Montesinos but he has insisted he paid the money back.

While Fujimori was credited with tackling terrorism and restoring Peru’s economy during his ten-year tenure as president from July 28, 1990 to November 17, 2000 he was also criticized for some of the methods he used to achieve his goals.

In 2000 Fujimori fled Peru and began a self-impose exile in Japan after it became clear he would be tried on corruption charges. He was eventually detained in 2005 when he visited Chile and in 2007 he was sentenced to six years on numerous charges. In April 2009 he was again before the court and was hand a 25-year sentence for ordering killings and kidnapping while president.
