Over a dozen people died Tuesday morning in northern India when a train slammed into the vehicle they were traveling in, authorities have confirmed. The accident happened at an unguarded railway crossing near the Madu Railway Station in the Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh state.
The driver of the jeep is believed to be at fault in the accident. He apparently tried to cross the railroad tracks even through the Mathura-Kasganj Express train was approaching the crossing. The jeep was “thrown six metres away” by the impact, an unidentified ministry official told AFP.
Police superintendent Chandra Prakash said fifteen of the seventeen passengers inside the jeep were killed. The two survivors sustained injuries and were hospitalized.
