Silversea Cruises confirmed Monday their luxury cruise ship Silver Shadow collided with a commercial ship in Ha Long Bay about 5 miles off the coast of Vietnam last week. The cruise line insists that “guests safety was never compromised” during the March 16 accident. Silver Shadow suffered “limited minor dents” and continued to the port of Ha Long Bay where passengers disembarked for scheduled tours.
Dense fog was present at the time of the accident. Passenger Andrew Lock told CNN the Vietnamese vessel sustained a large tear in its right side. "We struck the other ship in several places that we could see -- we struck it at the bridge, where they would operate from. We literally crushed the ship inwards. And we also struck the sides of the ship, causing a tear along the side, a vertical tear, quite substantial,” he said.
Silver Shadow continued on its 9 night cruise from Singapore to Hong Kong after the collision. The accident is under investigation.
