U.S. President Barack Obama has once again called upon Congress to move forward on a healthcare reform bill, urging the House and Senate to “act now” and pass a measure that would overhaul the current system.
Healthcare reform has been a priority for Obama since taking office and while he initially gained a lot of support for his proposals he has since run into strong opposition from not only Republicans but several Democrats who are concerned about the price tag attached to the bill.
Obama spoke after a meeting a with staff at a Washington D.C. children’s hospital and addressed those who are attempting to delay a vote saying, “There's some in this town who are content to perpetuate the status quo, are, in fact, fighting reform on behalf of powerful special interests.” He continued, “There are others who recognize the problem, but believe or perhaps hope that we can put off the hard work of insurance reform for another day, another year, and another decade.”
Obama appeared to be attacking a group of senators who have been pushing for more time to craft a bi-partisan bill. The President has asked that Congress pass a healthcare reform bill before the August recess.
As it stands there are several Congressional committees working on reform proposals and those will then lawmakers will attempt to piece together a unified bill that draws from each committee’s proposal. That bill would then be voted on by the House and the Senate and if passed would go to Obama’s desk to be signed into law.
