Brownstown, Il- A St. Louis truck driver died Saturday after his semi collides with another tractor-trailer and bursts into flames on I-70.
The accident occurred three miles west of Brownstown when a truck driver, Orentio Thompson of Lawrenceville, Georgia was pulling onto I-70 after he stopped to check his vehicle for a mechanical malfunction. As Thompson was returning to the driving lanes, another semi-truck driver Hasib Karahodzic of St. Louis, Missouri, rear-ended his trailer. Karahodzic’s truck burst into flames upon impact, trapping him in the cab.
Karahdozic’s son was driving behind his father’s semi and when he came upon the accident. He exited his truck and attempted to free his father from the burning wreckage, but was unsuccessful. Karahodzic was burned beyond recognition and was pronounced dead on the scene around 3a.m.
Thompson also incurred serious injury and was taken to a local hospital.
The accident is still under investigation, but police cited Thompson for failure to yield when merging with traffic.
