The European Union has opted to suspend more than $90 million in aid to Honduras as a result of the continued political instability inside the country.
A coup that removed President Manuel Zelaya from office has been heavily criticized by several international leaders and organizations yet the interim government, led by Roberto Micheletti, has ignored calls to restore the president.
The interim government has accused Zelaya of attempting to change the country’s constitution and have said on a number of occasions that if he attempts to return he will be arrested.
In a statement announcing the EU decision to suspend aid to Honduras External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner said, “In view of the circumstances, I have taken the difficult decision to suspend all budgetary support payments.”
Delegates representing Zelaya and Micheletti had been in Costa Rica to hold talks with President Oscar Arias in hopes of coming to an agreement but those talks collapsed when Arias insisted Zelaya return as leader of a unity government.
