A strong earthquake rocked southern Mexico Tuesday, but did not cause any major damage. The U.S. Geological Survey reports the 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck at a depth of 12.4 miles in Guerrero state. The epicenter was located about 15 miles east of Ometepec. Shaking was felt as far as 200 miles away in Mexico City. The resort city of Acapulco, which is about 120 miles from the epicenter, also reported feeling the earthquake.
The tremor is not expected to generate a tsunami. Strong aftershocks continued to rattle southern Mexico after the initial earthquake.
Authorities say no major damage has been reported. Power outages, broken windows and cracked walls appear to be the extent of the damage. "There are some broken windows, much fear, much panic," President Felipe Calderon said.
