Taliban Militants Launch Series of Attacks in Eastern Afghanistan

A series of attacks launched by Taliban militants in the eastern Afghanistan city of Gardez have left several dead and security personnel struggling to restore order.

 

At least four separate attacks involved gunmen and suicide bombers and targeted key sites within the city, including the governor’s compound. A police chief’s office, a police station and the intelligence directorate were also attacked.

 

According to officials six militants were killed in eth attacks, four shot by police and two militants blew themselves up. A number of Afghan security personnel were killed in the attacks; there has been no word on civilian casualties.

 

Taliban militants have stepped up their attacks in eastern Afghanistan in an attempt to disrupt the country’s August 20 elections.
