Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates Arrested

Henry Louis Gates Jr, who holds one of 20 elite professorships at Harvard University was arrested Thursday at him home.

Cambridge, Massachusetts police arrested Gates after responding to a call about “two black males” who appeared to be breaking in to two-story home. A woman reported seeing the one of the men “wedging his shoulder into the door as if he was trying for force entry.”

Gates was returning from a trip from China and found the front door of the house, which he leases from Harvard, jammed. He entered through the rear of the home. When police arrived and questioned him, Gates initially declined to show an officer his identification, allegedly saying, “Why, because I’m a black man in America?”

He later showed identification but was arrested anyway. Gates was charged with disorderly conduct because officers say he “exhibited loud and tumultuous behavior.”
