Protests Turn Violent in Tehran as Riot Police Arrest Scores of Pro-Reform Demonstrators

Iranian riot police have arrested scores of pro-reform protesters in Tehran on Tuesday after the two sides clashed during demonstrations against the recent presidential elections.

Public gatherings have been outlawed by the Iranian government since President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won re-election in June. The results of that presidential election were instantly contested and protesters immediately took to the streets, setting off a series of deadly clashes with government forces.

Despite the ban on demonstrations the pro-reform protesters have continued to gather and call for new elections. They have been backed by defeated candidate and former prime minister Mir-Hossein Mousavi who accused Ahmadinejad of vote-rigging.

Mousavi has gained the support of former Iranian presidents Hashemi Rafsanjani and Mohammad Khatami who have called into question the legitimacy of the current government.
