Tour de France Stage 16 Results: Mikel Astarloza Captures Stage Win, Alberto Contador Retains Yellow Jersey

Mikel Astarloza managed to capture his first stage at the 2009 Tour de France on Tuesday, winning the 99-mile Stage 16 trek from Martigny to Bourg-Saint-Maurice. Astarloza was followed by Sandy Casar and Pierrick Fedrigo who trailed by six seconds.

While Astarloza captured the Stage 16 victory the overall lead remains in the hands of the Spaniard, Alberto Contador, who finished the stage in the main pack to retain not just his yellow jersey but his sizeable lead as well.

Contador leads seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong by 1:37 and the chances the American will get a shot at number eight gets slimmer by the day. With both men riding for Astana Armstrong has already said he will be pushing for a Contador victory.

Armstrong is currently in second place with Bradley Wiggins sitting in third.
