A prisoner’s vision turns into thousands of lives saved years later.

Drug Rehab that was originally started in prison goes on to save tens of thousands of lives over 43 years, and is now available in Florida.

As a youngster William Benitez started down the wrong path in life very early on.  At the age of 15, Mr Benitez started down the road of drug addiction by smoking Marijuana.  As the years progressed, William’s drug usage escalated to even harder drugs and eventually into a full blown addiction to opiates/heroin.  With the addiction was also the degradation of his moral character.  He would eventually spend many years in and out of the prison system and the hope that he would be rehabilitated seemed all but lost, as he always seemed to relapse.  But then William’s life took a drastic, unforeseen change.

Benitez once again found himself in prison for possession of narcotics.  This time it was worse due to his extensive criminal record, and he ended up with fifteen years to life as his sentence term.  He was trapped in the vicious cycle of addiction, and there was end in sight.  He had tried everything he could to break the cycle up to that point:  the military, “cold turkey”, committal to psychiatric care and therapy, relocating, meetings, etc… .    Nothing was working for him and it seemed this was his life and he was another “hopeless drug addict”.

But William didn’t give up in spite of all of this.  He was determined to put drugs behind him despite all of his failures and be a better person.  While in prison, he stumbled upon a book in his spare time of trying to stay busy.  The book Benitez has happened upon was one by author and humanitarian, L. Ron Hubbard.  It was a book that dealt with human behavior.  Benitez read the book and became very involved in its concepts of fundamental issues of thought dealing with communication, ability, and control.  He kept reading and applying the ideas of the book and really felt that this would change his life; he felt that this was the answer that he was looking for all of those years and that he could finally overcome addiction, all because of the concepts in this book.

Amazed at the results he had gotten for himself, being the seemingly “untreatable drug addict”, Benitez spent a few months compiling a program to help others using the tools of Hubbard and requested that he be allowed to try to help fellow prison inmates in the same way.  He received permission from the prison officials to do after several attempts and he was able to deliver the program to 20 other inmates, all in prison for drug charges and admitted drug addicts.  He named the program model Narconon, a greek word which translated means simply, no drugs.

Since then, that same program that started in prison has turned into one of the most successful treatment programs in the world.  Due to its success, William was released from prison drug free and carried on this gift by establishing the first Narconon program outside of prison in Los Angeles to help those addicted to drugs.  The Narconon program is now in over 40 countries around the world and has helped thousands of addicted people get off drugs and become ethical, productive members of Society in the last 43 years.  That tradition is carried on at one of the newest residential centers using the Narconon program, Suncoast Rehabilitation Center in Florida.  With over a 70 % success rate, Suncoast is one of the most successful treatment centers in the country and proud to carry on the tradition of Narconon and the legacy of Mr Bentiez.
