Stunning Retractable Roof Enclosure for the New Aquatic Center in Bolivar Construction in Progress

The City of Bolivar, Missouri is thrilled to see their vision for a new aquatic center starting to take shape, and the residents couldn’t be more excited.
 
The City of Bolivar was faced with replacing an out-of-date aquatic facility that was barely being used, due to damage over the years and its overall state. The City envisioned a state-of-the-art center that would draw in the residents of Bolivar as well as increase membership and usage from neighboring municipalities. To take this vision to reality, the City partnered with the Roy Blunt YMCA to design and develop a cutting-edge new aquatic center as part of a “wellness campus” including the existing public library, seniors’ center, seniors’ health center, and leisure pool.
 
The new Aquatic Center will boast a retractable roof enclosure, designed, manufactured and currently being installed by OpenAire Inc, of Oakville Ontario. The stunning 110’ (33.5m) x 171’ (52.12m) enclosure will cover the aquatic area with two new indoor pools; a lap pool and a leisure pool. Designed with OpenAire’s exclusive maintenance-free thermally broken aluminum framing system, the roof is glazed with translucent, polycarbonate panels and the walls are glazed with 1” insulating glass for maximum light transmission. The roof is 43’ (13.1m) high at the ridge and can open up to 45% in good weather, and in combination with the sliding doors at the sides, provides fresh air and natural ventilation to create an outdoor pool environment. During the cooler or wet seasons, the roof and walls can close as needed to create a bright, inviting protected space all with the mere touch of a button.
 
The Bolivar Aquatic Centers’ design team Butler Rosenbury & Partners Architects and Wirt-Flavin Construction both of Springfield, MO, and Westport Pools of St. Louis – along with the City Administrator were invited to see Big Splash Island Adventure Waterpark in French Lick, Indiana, where an OpenAire retractable roof building encloses a 40,000 sq. ft. waterpark.
