Coroner: Whitney Houston Died Of Drowning, Cocaine Was Contributing Factor

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s office announced Thursday Whitney Houston died of accidental drowning with cocaine and heart disease as contributing factors. Houston, 48, was found dead in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on February 11. An autopsy revealed she had cocaine, marijuana, Xanax and Benadryl in her system at the time of her death.

"She could've passed out first due to the intoxication from the cocaine, or she could've had a heart attack and then drowned," Coroner assistant chief Ed Winter told People magazine. "It's probably one of those two scenarios."

Coroner Chief Craig Harvey said water was found in Houston’s lungs which “indicated to us that she was alive when she was submerged underwater.”

Houston’s sister-in-law and manager Patricia said they family is “saddened to learn of the toxicology results, although we are glad to now have closure.”

The singer is survived by her 18-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina and ex-husband Bobby Brown.
