With the discovery of five bodies in the Costa Concordia cruise ship wreckage on Thursday, authorities say divers have just two bodies left to find. Dive teams have been searching the partially submerged vessel since it struck rock and capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio on January 13. Holes have been blasted in the side of the ship to make access easier.
Italian officials say divers have been methodically searching each of the 1,500 cabins on board. Thursday’s discovery brings the number of bodies found to 30.
About 3,200 passengers and 1,000 crew members were on board when the accident happened. Survivors say chaos ensued almost immediately as there seemed to be no direction or leadership from Captain Francesco Schettino or top crew members. Schettino is accused of fleeing the stricken vessel while passengers and crew remained on board fighting for lifeboats.
