Dallas went with Tony Romo as their ninth starting quarterback since Troy Aikman and the fourth year player guided the Cowboys to a 35-14 road victory in Carolina.
Romo looked impressive in his starting debut with 270 yards passing and a touchdown and Dallas moved to 4-3 on the year. The Carolina Panthers fell to 4-4. The Panthers started the year winless after their first two games, rattled off four straight wins, and have now lost two in a row.
After falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter, Dallas settled down and grinded their way to 35 unanswered points and a much needed victory. Romo hit Jason Witten for a three yard touchdown pass at the beginning of the second quarter and Mike Vanderjagt added a field goal just before halftime to cut the Dallas deficit to 14-10.
Carolina could do little on offense after their first quarter burst, and their highly touted defense was able to reach Romo only once. Jake Delhomme could only manage 136 yards passing and was picked off once in the blowout.
Vanderjagt brought Dallas to within one after kicking a 24 yard field goal and on the ensuing kickoff Carolina fumbled and the Cowboys recovered. The first play from scrimmage Romo handed off to Julius Jones who went 14 yards for the touchdown and Dallas had their first lead of the game. Romo then connected with Terrell Owens on the two point conversion and Dallas boosted their lead to 21-14.
The Cowboys defense did a great job of holding the Carolina triple threat in check throughout the game. Steve Smith had six receptions for 54 yards, Keyshawn Johnson was limited to one catch for 19 and running back DeShaun Foster was limited to 50 yards on 15 carries.
With the score 21-14 Carolina took possession deep in their territory after a Dallas punt. On third down Delhomme dropped back and threw a deep ball up the sideline that was intercepted by Roy Williams. Dallas then pounded in another touchdown with Marion Barber and doubled up on Carolina 28-14.
Marion Barber added a late touchdown for his second of the game pushing the lead to 35-14. Barber was the perfect compliment to lead tailback Julius Jones. Barber totaled 49 yards on nine carries for the Cowboys.
For Romo, the Dallas offense just seemed to click as he found All-Pro wide receiver Terrell Owens nine times for 107 yards, Julius Jones rushed for 92 yards seemed to have little problem connecting with Terrell Owens throughout the game. The All-Pro wide receiver had nine catches for 107 yards
