South African residents upset with the government’s inability to provide basic services like water and housing clashed with police as protests continued to spread across the country on Wednesday.
Demonstrations have been staged over the past week but on Wednesday the protesters were involved in violent clashes with police attempting to disperse the crowds. Police fired rubber bullets at the protesters in Johannesburg, the Western Cape and the northeastern region of Mpumalanga and have arrested as many as 100 people in the events.
President Jacob Zuma had pledged to tackle poverty when he took office in April but many have criticized the leader for his failure to improve service delivery of water and electricity and provide adequate housing for those living in makeshift shacks.
