U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said the United States is prepared to defend its Gulf allies if Iran continues to ignore calls to halt its nuclear weapons program.
Clinton addressed the issue while in Thailand for a regional summit, saying a Iran would be no stronger with a nuclear program as it would be neutralized by a reinforced “defense umbrella” that covered the region. She also said Iran’s push for nuclear weapons could be counterproductive as it may spark an arms race in the region and actually make the country “less secure.”
Iran has denied the accusations that it has been developing a nuclear weapons program, claiming their nuclear program has concentrated on enriching uranium for power and nothing more.
Clinton also tackled the subject of a nuclear North Korea telling reporters, “We have made it very clear to the North Koreans that if they will agree to irreversible denuclearization, the United States as well as our partners will move forward on a package of incentives and opportunities including normalizing relations.”
