Mumbai Suspect Tells Court He’s Ready to Die

Just days after changing his plea from not guilty to guilty the main suspect in November’s deadly attacks in the Indian city of Mumbai has now told the court he is ready to die.

Mohammad Ajmal Amir Qasab is facing 86 charges including waging war on India, murder, kidnapping, robbery and possessing explosives and while he has admitted guilt prosecutors want the trial to proceed. According to chief public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam the guilty plea was entered as a means of avoiding the death penalty by placing the larger blame on Abu Ismail who is already dead.

Nikam stated, “Very shrewdly, very cleverly Qasab has tried to save his own skin by showing he was acting as a subordinate to Abu Ismail.” He continued, “He knows that by denying a major role, no Indian court is going to award him the death penalty.”

Qasab reacted strongly to that assertion telling the court, “If anyone believes that I am doing this to get mercy, then go ahead and hang me.”

More than 170 people were killed in the attacks on hotels, diners and a transportation hub.
