Luxembourg’s Frank Schleck, aided by his brother Andy, managed to capture the 105.3-mile Stage 17 trek on Wednesday but the win did little to damage the position of overall leader Alberto Contador who finished alongside the pair to actually extend his lead in eth 26-stage race.
Both Frank and Andy struck hard throughout the Stage 17 course but they couldn’t shake the Spaniard who appears all but assured of his second Tour de France win.
While Contador retained his yellow jersey his two closest rivals heading into Stage 17 saw their positions slip as Lance Armstrong fell to fourth overall and Bradley Wiggins dropped to sixth. For their efforts the Schleck brothers assumed a spot on the podium but the likelihood of them being there at the end of the Tour remains slim.
For Contador the Stage 17 ride couldn’t have gone any better as he now leads Andy Schleck by 2:26 and Frank by 3:25 with seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong a distant 3:55 behind.
