Two Earthquakes Hit Japan

The U.S. Geological Survey reports two mild earthquakes hit off the east coast of Japan’s main island, Honshu, Tuesday evening. No damages, injuries or deaths have been reported. The USGS said the tremors are not expected to generate a tsunami.

The first tremor struck at around 7:20 p.m. local time about 71 miles east of the capital, Tokyo. A 6.0 magnitude earthquake followed 40 minutes later. Its epicenter was 50 miles away from the city of Morioka and about 316 miles from Tokyo.

Tuesday’s earthquakes come two weeks after Japan marked the one year anniversary of a devastating 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami that took 19,000 lives.
