Aaron’s settles sexual harassment lawsuit for $6 million

Atlanta, GA- Aaron’s Inc., a furniture and appliance rental company, settled a sexual harassment lawsuit with a former employer for $6 million.

According to the original lawsuit, the employee was repeatedly sexually harassed by a manager when she was working for a Fairview Heights, Illinois location in 2006.

The employee and her sexual harassment attorney initially won a $95 million lawsuit in 2011, but Aaron’s appealed the decision. In a January 2012 hearing the court concluded that $95 million exceeded the maximum amount allowed by law, which is capped at $50 million. The court reduced the judgment to $38.9 million.

Aaron’s and the former employee agreed to settle for $6 million. Aaron’s filed to have the case dismissed now that they have reached an agreement with the accuser.

Sexual harassment in the workplace is a far too common occurrence. This behavior is detrimental to the employee and the workplace in general. Employees who encounter this behavior often find that their superiors fail to properly address the problem or take actions, such as decreased hours, demotion or dismissal, against the accuser, referred to as retaliation.

These employees often find that they need the assistance of a sexual harassment lawyer to end the harassment and recover any lost wages, if they have been fired.

A man or woman who has encountered sexual harassment in the workplace or retaliation for reporting the conduct can hire an experienced sexual harassment attorney to seek compensatory damages.
