Main Opposition Candidate in Kyrgyzstan Pulls Out of Election Claiming Widespread Fraud

The main opposition leader in Kyrgyzstan, Almazbek Atambayev, has pulled out of the country’s presidential election after claiming widespread fraud has made the process illegitimate.

Atambayev, the country’s former prime minister, made the announcement on Thursday, the same day polls opened, telling reporters “Due to mass voter fraud we demand that this election be stopped and a new election held instead.” He has said he will lead a march to the election commission in the evening to protest the vote.

President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, considered a heavy favorite to win a second term, reacted to Atambayev’s plans to march by saying “We will suppress, within the limits of the law, any attempts to organize disorder.”

While Bakiyev has insisted the election process has been fair the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), which has been monitoring the election, has said the media has shown a strong bias favoring “one candidate.”
