Amandla Stenberg Brushes Off Hunger Games Casting Controversy

Amandla Stenberg is not letting the unfortunate racist tweets about her Hunger Games character get to her. The 13-year-old actress, who delivered a touching performance of District 11 tribute Rue, released a statement Wednesday saying she is proud of the film.

"As a fan of the books, I feel fortunate to be part of The Hunger Games family. It was an amazing experience; I am proud of the film and my performance. I want to thank all of my fans and the entire Hunger Games community for their support and loyalty."

After the film opened in theaters last week, fans took to Twitter to criticize the casting of Stenberg and Dayo Okeniyi, who played tribute Thresh. Many fans complained about Stenberg and Okeniyi being black while their characters in the Hunger Games novel are described as having “dark brown skin.”

Okeniyi has not commented. The Hunger Games also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth.
