Ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya Vows to Return on Friday

Ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya has vowed to return to the country on Friday despite there being no new agreement concerning his political future.

Zelaya was overthrown and exiled on June 28 after the Honduran government accused the leader of attempting to change the country’s constitution. Despite international calls for Zelaya’s return to office the interim government has refused and threatened to arrest the president if he does return.

Mediation talks led by Costa Rican President Oscar Arias have produced little in the way of a resolution as supporters of interim president Roberto Micheletti have rejected calls to allow Zelaya to serve out the remainder of his presidential term.

Arias has expressed frustration with the mediation talks warning, “The clock is ticking fast, and it's ticking against the Honduran people” and declaring he will no longer head up the negotiations. That job, he said, should rest on the Organization of American States.

Despite the instability and uncertainty Zelaya has promised to return to Honduras on Friday, saying he would enter by land from neighboring Nicaragua. An early attempt to return to Honduras was halted when his plane was blocked from landing at the Tegucigalpa airport.
