Alberto Contador is all but assured of his second Tour de France victory after capturing the Stage 18 time trial on Thursday and building on his overall lead in the 26-stage event.
Contador has a relatively insurmountable lead over the rest of the field and now it becomes a battle for who will join the Spaniard on the final podium.
One of those spots could belong to Contador’s Astana teammate Lance Armstrong who worked his way back into third overall with an impressive ride on Thursday. The seven-time Tour de France winner had dropped to fourth following Wednesday’s gruelling Stage 17 ride but he benefited from the 25-mile time trial on Thursday to climb back into the top three.
