New York, NY- A new study shows that people who have had a tummy tuck or liposuction experience an improved quality of life and boost to their self-esteem.
The study was conducted by a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and appears in the April edition of their journal, Dr. Eric Swanson, who has a private practice in Kansas. Dr. Swanson evaluated the quality of life of 360 patients who had a liposuction or tummy tuck procedure. Sixty percent of the people evaluate had liposuction alone while 35 percent had a tummy tuck.
The patients who underwent liposuction alone recovered more quickly and missed an average of 6 days of work with a lower rate of pain. Those who had a tummy tuck required an average of 16 days to recover from their procedure.
Patients who had liposuction and a tummy tuck reported more pain, but were more satisfied with the results of the combined procedures.
Overall, 86 percent of the study’s participants experienced an improved self-esteem after their surgery. This is one of the first studies to evaluate a patient’s self-esteem post-surgery. Close to 70 percent reported an improved quality of life after liposuction and tummy tuck, also called abdominoplasty.
Dr. Swanson said in the study, “Liposuction and abdominoplasty, individually and in combination, produced high rates of patient satisfaction and reliably improve self-esteem.”
Patient satisfaction is especially important to cosmetic surgeons, who strive to not only make their patient’s look better, but also make them feel better.
