Chicago White Sox lefty Mark Buehrle became the 16th major league pitcher to toss a perfect game, setting down 27 consecutive Tampa Bay Rays hitters and earning a 5-0 run.
Buehrle nearly lost the perfect game in the top of the ninth when Gabe Kapler sent a deep drive to center but Dewayne Wise, in as a defensive replacement, went over the wall, pulled the ball back and managed to hold on to it for the first out. Buehrle then set Hernandez down on strikes for out number two and then Bartlett grounded out to Alexei Ramirez at short for the final out.
For Buehrle the no-hitter was his second in his career, having blanked the Texas Rangers two years ago.
Randy Johnson was the last picther to toss a perfect game when he blanked the Atlanta Braves in 2004.
