Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has announced that plans to vote on a health care plan before Congress goes on recess in August have been scrapped. The decision is a crushing blow to President Barack Obama who has been pushing for a bill since he assumed office.
In making the announcement Reid stated, “It's better to have a product based on quality and thoughtfulness rather than try to jam something through.” Those sentiments reflect those expressed by Republicans who have called into question the speed at which the legislation was moving.
Republicans have been calling for more debate concerning the issue of revamping the health care system and have warned that an aggressive push to hurry a vote will only lead to more waste.
Obama wanted Congress to vote prior to the recess so that members of the House and Senate would have enough time to structure a unified bill before December. With 2010 a congressional election year there are fears that the health care bill could be a divisive issue and cause many lawmakers to abandon their support.
