Nine Afghan police officers in the southeast province of Paktika were killed Thursday night by a fellow police officer. Afghan officials say the men had been drugged with sleeping pills earlier in the day and were asleep when they were shot. The suspect fled the scene in a white government vehicle packed with weapons, including multiple AK-47 assault rifles and extra magazines.
A spokesman for the Taliban claims the officer was acting on the group’s behalf and is a Taliban militant. "He has joined our mujahedeen," spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a text message to reporters.
The suspect’s two brothers were detained by authorities for questioning, according to a provincial spokesman. The shooting is under investigation.
