Despite the election commission ruling the vote valid European monitors have condemned Thursday’s presidential election in Kyrgyzstan, saying the poll was “marred by many problems and irregularities.”
The Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) released a statement on Friday declaring, “Sadly, this election did not show the progress we were hoping for and it again fell short of key standards Kyrgyzstan has committed to as a participating state of the OSCE.”
Main opposition leader Almazbek Atambayev, a former prime minister of Kyrgyzstan, pulled out of the race on Thursday after claiming the election had been marred by fraud and voter irregularities. Atambayev’s allegations appeared to be supported by OSCE as their statement went on to say, “Election day was marred by many problems and irregularities, including ballot box stuffing, inaccuracies in the voter lists and multiple voting.”
According to OSCE the irregularities clearly favored incumbent Kurmanbek Bakiyev who is said to have secured more than 85 percent of the vote to secure a landslide victory. Bakiyev has denounced the claims of fraud and claimed the elections had been free and fair.
