Results and Highlights from around the National Hockey League
Carolina (6-5-2) got two goals from Ray Whitney and Rod Brind’Amour while Cam Ward stopped 40 of 42 shots he faced as the Hurricanes beat the Atlanta Thrashers (8-3-3) in a Southeast divisional battle. It was the second loss in a row for the Thrashers and the third they’ve suffered against the Hurricanes this year.
The Colorado Avalanche (6-4-2) got goals from Joe Sakic, Mark Rycroft, Wojtek Wolski, Brad Richardson and Brett McLean in their 5-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets (3-6-1). Sergei Federov, David Vyborny and Fredrik Modin scored for Columbus.
The Red Wings (7-4-1) held off the Calgary Flames (3-7-1) 3-2 in Detroit. Johan Franzen, Tomas Holmstrom, and Brett Lebda had goals in the Detroit win. Calgary was only able to manage 15 shots on goal while the Red Wings pounded the Flames net with 34 shots.
With three goals in the third period, the Toronto Maple Leafs (7-4-3) were able to go into Tampa Bay (5-7-0) and knock off the Lightning 4-2. Hal Gill tied the score 2-2 after two minutes of play into the third period and Ian White gave Toronto a 3-2 lead with his first goal of the year while the Leafs were on a power play.
Eric Lindros netted two goals for the Stars and Marty Turco stopped 23 of 24 shots as Dallas (10-2-0) defeated the visiting St. Louis Blues (3-5-3) 4-1. Mike Modano added his eighth goal of the year along with an assist in the Stars win. Keith Tkachuk provided the lone goal for the Blues.
Nashville (8-3-1) got a goal from Vernon Fiddler 1:05 into the first period and the Predators never trailed in their 5-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers (7-5-0). Ryan Smyth scored his seventh goal of the season for the Oilers in the loss.
Jaromir Jagr scored on a power play in overtime as the N.Y. Rangers (6-6-0) beat the Anaheim Ducks (9-0-4) 4-3. Jagr also had an assist in Brendan Shanahan’s eleventh goal of the season while Teemu Selanne scored his second goal of the year for the Ducks.
Evgeni Malkin scored his seventh goal of the year in overtime and Sidney Crosby had three assists as the Pittsburgh Penguins (7-3-0) beat the Los Angeles Kings (4-8-3) 4-3 in extra time. Mark Recchi assisted in two goals for the Penguins.
