An evangelist was convicted Friday of taking minors
across state lines for sex. A jury in Arkansas found Tony Alamo guilty of all 10
federal counts against him.
Alamo, 74, was arrested in September after a complaint
was filed last year. He was accused of transporting 5 girls younger than 18 across
state lines for sex between March 1994 and October 2005. The complaint included
accounts from 3 of the 5 victims. All 3 say they were sexually abused by Alamo.
Alamo, whose real name is Bernie Hoffman, is the founder
and leader of Tony Alamo Christian Ministries. His 15-acre compound near
Texarkana, Arkansas was raided as a part of the investigation. Alamo also has
compounds in Oklahoma and New Jersey.
Alamo will be sentenced at a later date. Each count holds
a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
