Experimental plane crashes into Florida grocery store, injures five

Five people were injured, three seriously, when an experimental plane crashes into a Publix grocery store Monday evening.

A single engine plane had just taken off form Deland airport when it lost power and crashed into the roof of the supermarket in a busy shopping center.  The plane landed on the back of the store in the meat department.

The pilot and one passenger on the plane were flown to a nearby hospital and were listed in critical condition.

Three shoppers were also injured; one man had severe burns on his legs. There were a total of thirty five shoppers and thirty employees in the store at the time of the crash.

Reports indicate that the aircraft, an experimental amphibious plane, had trouble almost immediately after take-off. The Orlando Sentinel reported that the crash was caused by mechanical failure.

Officials do not know the exact cause of the crash but the FAA arrived on the scene to conduct an investigation.
