Moscow Market Fire Leaves 15 Migrant Workers Dead

Over a dozen migrant workers died early Tuesday when a fire broke out at a market in Moscow, Russia.  Fire department spokesman Sergei Vlasov said the blaze started around 5 a.m. in living quarters at Kachalovsky market. The fire caused the roof of the small building to collapse, killing 15 migrant workers who were sleeping inside.

According to Vlasov, all of the dead were from former Soviet nations. None of the victims have been identified. The cause of the fire is unknown and is under investigation. Authorities believe electric heaters likely sparked the blaze.

Meanwhile, Russian authorities confirmed Monday that 31 people died in a plane crash in Siberia. The UTair flight went down shortly after leaving an airport in Tyumen. Twelve passengers survived and are currently in critical condition.

The cause of the crash remains unclear, but a spokesman for the Russian Investigation Committee said human error and plane malfunction “are considered to be the most likely causes.” Authorities will review the contents on the flight data recorders in their investigation.
