Juan Manuel Garate captured his first stage at the 2009 Tour de France after winning the gruelling 104-mile Stage 20 trek that began in Montelimar and ended with a 13-mile ascent up Mont Ventoux.
The Stage 20 ride was the final test for Alberto Contador who entered the day with the yellow jersey and a commanding lead over Andy Schleck and his Astana teammate and seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong. Contador passed that test with little trouble as he finished in a group that included his two closest competitors and will head into Sunday’s final stage with more than four minutes separating him form Schleck.
As for Lance Armstrong he will enter Stage 21 with a 37 second advantage over Bradley Wiggins for a place on the podium. Armstrong came out of 3 ½ years of retirement to ride in the 2009 Tour de France and has surprised many with his ability to remain one of the elite riders in the world.
