Taliban Militants Attack Government Buildings in Southern Afghanistan

Taliban militants attacked several government buildings in the southeastern Afghan city Khost on Saturday, injuring at least 14 civilians and three police officers.

According to defense officials at least eight militants attacked the city’s main police station and surrounding buildings before being engaged by security personnel. Six of those militants were said to have blown themselves up, another was shot and killed and the eighth was said to have escaped.

With Afghanistan’s presidential election scheduled for August 20 the Taliban has stepped up their attacks within the country, a challenge security officials will have to tackle over the coming month.
