Landslide in Chinese Province of Sichuan Kills at least Six, Number Expected to Rise

Heavy rain has been blamed for a deadly landslide in the Chinese province of Sichuan that has killed at least six people and destroyed a bridge that served as a main artery into Wenchuan county where reconstruction work had been underway following last year’s earthquake.

Officials have warned the death toll could rise significantly as several vehicles were tossed into the river below the bridge following its collapse.

According to the Chinese Daily newspaper the bridge had been used by more than 10,000 vehicles each day and was critical in the reconstruction efforts in Wenchuan. With the collapse those efforts could be stalled for some time as the area still tries to recover from last May’s deadly quake that killed more than 85,000 people.
