Interim Government in Honduras Calls Return of Manuel Zelaya a Publicity Stunt

The interim government of Honduras has called the brief return of ousted President Manuel Zelaya a publicity stunt and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the symbolic act was “not conducive to the broader effort to restore constitutional order.”

Zelaya, who was forcibly removed from the country in late June, has been warned that any attempt to return would be blocked and if he entered the country he would be arrested. Friday’s effort to cross the border was largely ignored by the interim government due to its brief nature.

Zelaya took just a few steps across the border before encountering security forces and retreating back into Nicaragua. The ousted president pledged to make another attempt but interim president Roberto Micheletti called the crossing “ill-conceived and silly” and warned any future attempts would result in arrest.

Addressing his brief return Zelaya told the Venezuelan-based TV network Telesur “I am not afraid but I'm not crazy either. There could be violence and I don't want to be the cause.”

It has been nearly one month since Zelaya was forced out due to his attempts to change the country’s constitution so that he could run for a second term in office.
