Guinea-Bissau Holds Run-Off Vote in Presidential Elections

Guinea-Bissau is in the process of holding its run-off vote to determine the country’s new president, four months after President Joao Bernardo Vieira was assassinated by the army.

The run-off includes Malam Bacai Sanha, considered to be the font-runner, and Kumba Yala. Both are former heads of state who have pledged to bring peace and stability to a country that has seen little of either.

Sanha has been the clear favourite in the presidential election after securing 40 percent in the first-round of polling in June while Yala finished second with 30 percent. While Sanha served as interim president from 1999-2000 he has lost his two previous presidential elections to Yala and Vieira.
