Former boxing champ Vernon Forrest was killed in Atlanta Saturday night. Forrest was shot to death in an apparent robbery, police said Sunday.
Atlanta police Sgt. Lisa Keyes says Forrest, 38, was shot “multiple times in the back.” No other details on his death were available. An autopsy is planned for Sunday.
Forrest had a 41-3 career record with 29 knockouts. He was also a member of the 1992 Olympic boxing team.
“Vernon was one of the few decent people in boxing. I mean really decent. He cared about mentally challenged adults. He cared about kids. I just can’t believe it,” promoter Gary Shaw said of Forrest, who worked with the Destiny’s Child group home to provide housing for the mentally challenged.
Forrest’s family has not commented.
